Health and Gatherings June 10, 2006

Previously, I mentioned that my health haven’t been that fantastic lately for weeks. I still haven’t fully recovered yet although I am not so tired now. Still need lots of water though.

The very interesting thing is that although 2 of my friends SMS me an invitation to their daughter’s 1st birthday celebration on the same day, same time, 2 very different locations. If the locations were near, I could have shuttled myself to both, unfortunately, they are on 2 different ends of the country. I could have fainted except I was lying on my bed digesting the second SMS. I had been pre-empted by the 1st friend about 3 weeks ago so I was prepared to make myself available on that evening. As for the 2nd SMS, I was totally unprepared. That was the one I was reading while trying to recover my strength since the sore throat attack.

Could have lost my voice except I couldn’t shout or laugh too loud. I mean, how the heck can 2 very different people choose the same day, same time and different locations to celebrate such joyful birthdays? Since I had promised my 1st friend, obviously I can’t just miss it, right? As for the 2nd friend, I’m so sorry and disappointed that I can’t meet up with those who can make it. It has been quite some time since we last had any gathering of sort besides ROMs or weddings.

Seems like the only time we ever meet up is to get invited to a friend’s ROM, wedding or baby birth/birthday. In the past, we just rang up each other 2 days before and make the appointment for shopping or just dinner. Now, we have to send out announcements 1 month before to pre-empt everyone. Each of us have different workplaces and some have partners/spouses. Others have to study part time and hence the difficulty in arranging any gathering.

Since we usually buy presents for ROMs and birthdays, we make arrangements before-hand to force everyone to come out. Those who want to have their share shall have to come out otherwise it’s hard to autograph the card lor. I’m not being mean or anything. It’s just a whole lot easier to get everyone except the receipient to meet up and sign the card.

Unfortunately, not everyone’s schedule can agree. Most of the time we have difficulties trying to get everyone to meet at the same time. Some work on shifts, some have fixed commitments such as classes, others have some sort of appointment that can’t be changes. So, we often end up signing the card on the day itself, hiding in some corner with someone who have colourful pens, God bless.

[...] Life loves to throw you events that are the same but not really the same. How so? Well, a few months ago, I had to decide between two 1st birthday parties which my friends have planned. Actually, it was that difficult because I had promised one, it was the other that I was disappointed that I couldn’t attend. I had been waiting for that event, mind you. [...]
